505 million years ago the earth turned really cold and an ice cap formed over what is now North America. That picture shows how ice caps look.An ice cap is a glacier, a thick layer of ice and snow, that covers fewer than 50,000 square kilometers. Also it is a covering of ice over a large area on the polar region of a planet. They form when Snow accumulates year after year, then melts and slowly changes texture from fluffy powder to a block of hard, round ice pellets.

These are the Appalachian mountains and they were formed when the North American and Eurasian plates collided. At the end of the Paleozoic Era, during the Permian Period which began 275 million years ago, there was tremendous mountain-building throughout the planet including Appalachia. Appalachia was a coal mining area in the Appalachian Mountains. Great pressures buckled the sedimentary beds of rock upward from the sea bottom and the Appalachian Mountains came into being.

Pangea was a landmass that existed when all continents were joined, from about 300 to 200 million years ago. Alfred Wegener's theory for continental drift was that all the continents moved together at once to form a giant continent that was one super continent called Pangea. Alfred Wegener is most remembered for advancing the theory of continental drift in 1912.
